France’s 2026 French Tech 120 list spotlights AI, cybersecurity and greentech amid slower growth

Date:

France has unveiled its 2026 “French Tech 120,” a government-backed roster of startups and scale-ups that officials see as central to the country’s digital economy through the end of the decade.

The program is designed less as a trophy list than as an industrial policy tool: selected companies get intensified support from the French administration, easier access to public procurement, and international visibility under the “France” brand. The announcement lands in a tougher economic moment, with France’s national statistics agency, INSEE, projecting the country will grow just 0.7% this year as an oil shock squeezes household purchasing power.

A tech sector navigating a tougher macro backdrop

French startups are operating under tighter constraints. Sluggish growth is weighing on domestic demand, while geopolitical and energy tensions are reshaping conditions across Europe.

That pressure isn’t confined to France. German economic institutes have revised their 2026 inflation forecast upward to 2.8%, a sign that cost strains are spreading across borders.

For French Tech 120 scale-ups, the shift is tangible: fundraising is more selective, valuations are examined more closely, and investors are demanding credible paths to profitability rather than growth-at-all-costs projections.

Digital infrastructure—and “sovereignty”—back in focus

The resilience of France’s tech ecosystem also depends on its underlying infrastructure. A fire at the data centers of a French cloud hosting provider previously knocked millions of websites offline, affecting government portals, banks, and media outlets.[5] The episode served as a reminder that “digital sovereignty” is decided in server rooms as much as in startup pitch decks.

Some French Tech 120 companies work directly on infrastructure and data security. The data center boom remains strong more broadly: at Legrand, the French electrical and digital building infrastructure company, data centers are expected to account for about 30% of revenue in 2026, up from 26% the prior year, driven in part by U.S. demand.[3]

What the 2026 selection says about France’s industrial priorities

The makeup of the 2026 class reflects France’s industrial policy bets: artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, greentech, and digital health account for most of the companies selected. The stated ambition is to help produce firms capable of competing with U.S. hyperscalers and Asian champions in their own markets.

The challenge is still wide open. France has a well-regarded pipeline of engineers and a strong public research base. Turning those advantages into profitable companies at global scale is exactly what the French Tech 120 is meant to accelerate—and the 120 selected firms have until the end of the decade to prove they can do it.
