Renault is moving to cut 800 engineering roles in France through a voluntary departure plan that the automaker aims to complete by 2027, according to information confirmed by sources close to the matter.
The plan, which has been circulating internally in recent days, reflects a broader shift across Europe’s auto industry as the transition to electric vehicles forces manufacturers to rethink what kinds of engineering skills they need—and how many.
Renault is not pursuing forced layoffs under this approach. Instead, it is opting for voluntary exits, a common tool in large French industrial restructurings designed to reduce social conflict and limit legal challenges.
A skills reset, not just a cost-cutting move
At stake is more than payroll. Engineers trained around internal-combustion powertrains, manual gearboxes, or certain electronic architectures inherited from the 2000s no longer match the needs of a company betting on EVs, onboard software, and new vehicle architectures.
Renault is not alone. Stellantis has pursued similar reductions in Europe in recent years, and Volkswagen has opened talks with German labor partners over large job cuts at its plants.
France’s legal framework shapes how companies execute these moves. Tools include the “plan de sauvegarde de l’emploi” (PSE), a formal job-protection and layoff procedure; “rupture conventionnelle collective” (RCC), a collectively negotiated separation agreement; and “plan de départs volontaires” (PDV), a voluntary departure plan. Renault is choosing the PDV route, which preserves voluntariness and avoids the stigma of positions eliminated by force—though 800 engineers is still a sizable number for a single restructuring cycle.

That split can mechanically create pockets of overstaffing where combustion-engine project volumes are declining faster than expected—particularly in Europe. The plan for 800 voluntary departures fits directly into that rebalancing.
For the engineers affected, the terms of departure—bonuses, redeployment options, and support for retraining—are expected to be central in negotiations with employee representatives. Renault has until 2027 to complete the cycle. Unions, meanwhile, will have to weigh accepting a voluntary plan with negotiated terms against opposing any reduction of high-skilled jobs in France on principle.
