Dumarey Powerglide to close Strasbourg auto-parts plant in 2026, putting 320 jobs at risk amid wider shakeout

Date:

Dumarey Powerglide, an automotive supplier that makes transmission components, plans to shut down its Strasbourg site in 2026—a move that would eliminate 320 direct jobs, according to union officials.

The company’s management told labor unions of the decision on January 7, 2026, in a sector already under strain. Just months earlier, a job-protection plan at the same Strasbourg location had already cut 234 positions.

The blow lands as France’s auto industry faces pressure from factory floors to showroom networks. At the same time, an automotive retail chain is closing nine stores nationwide, including four in Occitanie, a region in southern France.

Strasbourg: “Liquidation of 320 direct employees,” union says

France’s CGT union reacted angrily to the announcement. “Here, it’s the liquidation of 320 direct employees. I’m not counting the indirect ones because we also have contractors. The impact is going to be huge,” Malek Kirouane, a CGT union representative, told AFP.

The 320 figure covers direct employees only and does not include jobs tied to subcontractors and service providers that work around the Alsace site.

Dumarey Powerglide manufactures transmission-related parts—equipment that has become more vulnerable as electric vehicles gain ground and demand shifts away from traditional mechanical systems.

From Strasbourg to Poissy, France’s auto footprint keeps shrinking

The Strasbourg closure is not happening in isolation. In April 2026, Stellantis confirmed it would end vehicle manufacturing at Poissy, a historic plant that has produced Ford, Simca, Chrysler, Talbot, Peugeot and Opel models since before World War II.

Poissy’s workforce had steadily fallen—from 10,000 employees in 2005 to 7,000 in 2010, and then to fewer than 2,000 before the final shutdown. Until recently, the plant built the DS3 and the Opel Mokka, two models described as having disappointing sales.

Together, the closures highlight a contracting industrial map for the French auto sector. For Dumarey’s 320 Strasbourg workers, talks over departure terms were still underway at the time of the announcement.
