Cayenne’s Place des Palmistes—one of the busiest public squares in the capital of French Guiana—was turned into an open-air hiring forum bringing together 50 companies and 500 job openings.
The pitch was straightforward: employers set up booths outdoors and job seekers could apply on the spot. No online platform, no digital screening—just face-to-face conversations and résumés handed over directly, with the promise of immediate opportunities.
Organizers highlighted the scale—500 openings from 50 recruiters—as an unusually concentrated push in a territory where the job market is often fragmented and access to information can be uneven.
Why Place des Palmistes is a strategic location in Cayenne
Place des Palmistes isn’t a neutral backdrop in Cayenne. The square has long served as a focal point for collective civic life—public demonstrations, speeches, and community gatherings—making it a deliberate choice for a high-visibility employment event where residents naturally pass through.
The Maison des entreprises of CCI Guyane (the local chamber of commerce and industry) is based there, reinforcing the square’s role as a hub for the territory’s economic actors. Professional training sessions are also held there regularly, including courses on workplace risks tied to working at height.
Rising investment, but persistent hiring needs
The job forum comes as French Guiana’s financing picture has been strengthening. In 2025, the Agence Française de Développement (France’s public development finance institution) signed funding for 13 projects in French Guiana totaling €99 million (about $107 million).
That commitment spans multiple sectors and points to a territory in motion, even as employment needs remain structurally high. Concentrating so many openings in one place for a single day also reflects a local reality: companies are hiring, but they can struggle to reach candidates who don’t always know where to turn. A public-square format is designed to close that gap.
