Granville’s “La Rafale” isn’t a fighter jet — it’s a local folk-rock act led by Hugo Bailleul since 2016

In Granville, a seaside town in Normandy, “La Rafale” doesn’t refer to France’s well-known Dassault fighter jet. It’s the name of a Granville-based music outfit — a small, officially registered entity that has been tied to a folk-rock group led by Hugo Bailleul since 2016.

The name can be confusing, but the paperwork is clear: La Rafale is listed at Place Cambernon in Granville and was declared on February 5, 2016, to INSEE, France’s national statistics agency, under legal classification 5710. Official data from France’s national business register shows the organization has a single employee and remains active.

La Rafale performs in a folk-rock style and is slated to appear alongside John and Betty as part of an evening that also includes Famille Wilson. The event is being held in Granville, in Normandy.

A folk-rock presence rooted in Granville’s local scene

Granville’s music circuit has its regulars, and La Rafale is one of them. Founded 10 years ago, the structure is modest — one manager, a declared headcount of one, and a downtown address — but it shows up consistently on local stages.

The pairing with John and Betty, another folk-rock act, fits a familiar model for smaller venues along the English Channel coast: shared bills that bring multiple local groups together. Famille Wilson rounds out the lineup.

Hugo Bailleul has remained in charge since the start

Hugo Bailleul has run La Rafale from the beginning. No change in leadership has been recorded in the register since February 2016, according to data from the Annuaire Entreprises API accessed via data.gouv.fr.

Official records also indicate the organization remains active, with no collective insolvency proceedings underway. Whether the name is an intentional nod — or a coincidence — with Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jet isn’t documented. What is documented is the staying power of a small Normandy arts entity that has kept going for a decade.
