Ilyes Housni is moving on from Paris Saint-Germain after his contract expired, leaving the French powerhouse as a free agent and signing with AS Nancy-Lorraine in Ligue 2.

The young forward, developed inside PSG’s youth academy, will drop down a division in search of regular playing time and a clearer path to first-team minutes.

A Paris chapter closes

Housni will not extend his stay at PSG. With his deal in the French capital now finished, he has made his departure official by committing to Nancy, a club competing in Ligue 2, France’s second division.

For Housni, the move ends a formative stretch at one of Europe’s top academies. Lacking enough opportunities at the highest level, he is choosing a lower division to restart his progression.

Nancy offers a reset — and a showcase

Nancy, a historic name in French soccer, is offering Housni what the club describes as a concrete sporting project in the second tier. For a striker looking for consistency and minutes, Ligue 2 can function as a direct shop window, with scouts closely tracking players who have lacked exposure.

Nancy, aiming to regain ambition after several difficult seasons, is betting on young talent like Housni as it builds its roster.

Why the move from PSG to Ligue 2 adds up

PSG academy, Ligue 2 destination: Housni is following a familiar route for PSG-trained players who haven’t broken through in Ligue 1 — leaving on a free transfer to a second-division club to reboot a career.

A visibility opportunity for Nancy: Ligue 2 gives Housni a chance to stack up playing time and put himself back in front of recruiters, while Nancy targets players trained at major academies.

No transfer fee required: Nancy is getting a technically polished player without paying a transfer fee, a common approach for Ligue 2 clubs operating under tighter budgets.

PSG’s free-agent pipeline stays active: Each summer, PSG releases multiple out-of-contract players, feeding the broader transfer market across Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

Housni’s profile

Trained at PSG, Housni is part of a generation that passed through one of Europe’s best academies without establishing itself in the first team. Ligue 2 clubs know that pathway well, regularly benefiting from departures of players developed at elite training centers who haven’t yet made the jump at the top professional level.

His arrival also reflects a broader second-division recruiting strategy in France: identify well-schooled players available for free at the end of contracts, with the possibility of a future resale if they deliver.

PSG’s out-of-contract market is busy again this summer

Housni is not the only player leaving PSG for free this summer. As in every offseason, PSG is letting several players from its academy system or professional group walk when their contracts end, adding supply to the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 markets.

For Nancy, tapping that pool without paying a transfer fee represents a budget-friendly opening the Lorraine-based club could not ignore.
