Renault’s new Boreal SUV will be sold in 71 countries—just not in France

Date:

Renault is rolling out its new Boreal SUV across 71 countries from Latin America to the Mediterranean region, but the automaker is deliberately keeping it out of France.

The Boreal is designed for global growth markets rather than Western Europe, reflecting Renault’s accelerated international strategy. A family SUV aimed at regions where demand is surging, it leans on a two-continent manufacturing footprint as Renault works to defend and expand its position against fast-moving Korean and Chinese rivals.

The model is derived from the Dacia Bigster, a relationship Renault is using to keep development costs in check while nudging the vehicle slightly upmarket under the Renault badge. Renault presents the Boreal as the fourth vehicle developed specifically to win outside its traditional European stronghold as part of the group’s expansion push.

Turkey and Brazil split production across two continents

Renault is building the Boreal in two places: Brazil will handle part of production, while Turkey will supply certain European markets as well as the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin. The company has used similar multi-country production strategies for other vehicles: the Kardian is made in Brazil and Morocco; the Duster comes off Turkish lines; and the Grand Koleos is assembled in South Korea.

The Boreal fits Renault’s broader approach of producing vehicles close to the markets they’re meant to serve—and making a clear call not to crowd its Western European lineup, where Renault is betting on other models. In Turkey and across the Mediterranean basin, more than half of vehicles sold are SUVs, according to data cited by the group, making the Boreal’s positioning a straightforward match for local demand.

71 countries targeted, with France intentionally left out

Renault’s distribution plan for the Boreal spans 71 countries. Latin America sits at the top of the priority list, where SUV popularity is climbing sharply. Mexico, North Africa, and the Middle East are also key targets. In Europe, Renault is selecting only a handful of markets—and France is not among them.

Renault is explicit about why. In its home market, the company is focusing on models such as the R5 and the electric Scenic, which it sees as better aligned with local expectations. Bringing the Boreal to France, the article says, would have risked cannibalizing an already crowded SUV offering without adding enough differentiation. Instead, Renault is reserving the model for regions where demand is structurally stronger and premium competition is less entrenched.

It’s not the first time Renault has made that kind of regional call. The Grand Koleos, a higher-end SUV produced in South Korea, is also not sold in Europe. And the Filante—unveiled in early 2026 in Seoul—will follow the same playbook: a 250-horsepower hybrid crossover developed with Geely and built at the Korean plant in Busan, it will be sold in Korea, the Gulf, and Latin America, but never offered on the European continent.

Renault says its international bet is paying off

Renault is tying the Boreal’s market-by-market rollout to results it says are already visible in the numbers. The automaker says it was the best-selling French car brand worldwide in 2024, with 1,577,000 vehicles sold. Nearly 40% of those sales came from outside Europe—560,000 vehicles.

International sales outside Europe rose 11% in 2025 to 616,000 vehicles, according to Fabrice Cambolive, the head of the Renault brand. The figures help explain why Renault is willing to launch a major new SUV across dozens of markets while skipping its home country entirely.

Renault’s “International Plan 2027” calls for eight new models backed by an investment of €3 billion (about $3.2 billion) over four years. The Boreal is the fourth model in that sequence, with the Filante listed as the fifth. Each vehicle is aimed at a specific region, with production outside France and trims tailored to local standards.

Competing with Korean and Chinese brands, Renault redraws the map

In Latin America, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean region, Renault is fighting on contested ground. The article points to intense competition from Hyundai and Kia, as well as Chinese brands such as BYD and Chery, which have been expanding quickly with well-equipped SUVs priced aggressively. Renault’s response, the article says, is built on years of local market experience—especially in Brazil—and a competitive price range.

That’s where the Boreal is meant to land: a volume-focused, family-oriented SUV positioned as accessible rather than ultra-premium like the Filante. Renault is counting on scale—selling the Boreal across 71 markets—to generate enough efficiencies to keep the model profitable even without France in the mix.

In practice, the Boreal reflects Renault’s two-track strategy: in Europe, an electric transition and more premium-leaning models; internationally, higher volumes, gasoline or hybrid SUVs, and a brand image centered on reliability rather than luxury.
