GPA Group, which calls itself France’s leading automotive recycler and parts reuser, has set up operations near the western French city of Angers, expanding its footprint in a market where demand for used parts remains strong.
The company is now based in Écouflant, a town bordering Angers, after buying an existing salvage-yard operation rather than building a new facility from scratch.
GPA purchased the former Debrito brothers’ auto scrapyard in 2024, according to Ouest-France—an acquisition that reflects the group’s strategy of expanding region by region while reinforcing its position in vehicle recycling and the resale of recovered components.
Cars are “the most recycled consumer product” in France, GPA says
Automotive recycling occupies a distinctive place in France’s circular economy, shaped by strict rules for end-of-life vehicles and the licensed centers that dismantle them. “It’s the most recycled consumer product,” GPA says of the car-recycling chain.
In practice, France’s regulatory framework requires approved facilities to recover and reuse a very high share of the materials they collect from vehicles that are no longer roadworthy.
GPA says it operates on two fronts: straightforward recycling—processing vehicles at the end of their life—and reuse, putting replacement parts back into circulation from cars that have been wrecked or taken out of service.
That second business line has grown more important as prices for new parts have surged and the broader used market has expanded.
Écouflant becomes a new base in the Pays de la Loire region
By locating in Écouflant, GPA positions itself in a dense population area next to Angers and its metro area—an advantage for a business that depends on collecting and processing large volumes of vehicles.
For operators like GPA, logistics and geographic access can matter as much as processing capacity, because the model relies on moving vehicles efficiently into dismantling and recovery streams.
Taking over an existing site also speeds up the ramp-up. The facility already has infrastructure suited to salvage and recycling work, reducing the time needed to get operations running compared with starting from zero.
A “mission-driven” corporate model in a changing industry
GPA also highlights a status that remains unusual in the sector: it describes itself as France’s first “automotive recycler with a mission,” a legal designation in France that commits a company—through its corporate bylaws—to specific, verifiable social and environmental objectives beyond profit.
In auto recycling, that positioning could become a competitive edge as European regulatory pressure increases around recovery rates for electric vehicles and their batteries, particularly compared with companies that do not carry the same certification.
At the same time, the used market has become a pillar of France’s auto sector, giving reused parts greater visibility among both individual customers and repair professionals.
