Mistral AI says it has secured access to as much as 200 megawatts of computing capacity in France under a new agreement with Campus AI, a French operator of data centers built for artificial intelligence workloads.
The announcement, relayed by Bpifrance—France’s state-backed public investment bank—casts the partnership as one of the most significant AI infrastructure commitments made on French soil.
A France-based alternative to relying on U.S. hyperscalers
For Mistral, the goal is straightforward: lock in training and inference capacity anchored in France, rather than depending exclusively on U.S. hyperscalers. The deal with Campus AI fits the “sovereignty” logic the Paris-based lab has emphasized since its creation in 2023.
Campus AI specializes in building and operating high-density computing centers designed for AI workloads—an area under heavy strain in Europe, where demand regularly outpaces available supply.
Bpifrance signals the state sees compute as strategic
Bpifrance’s presence in the announcement is deliberate. The public investment bank has been supporting the buildout of French AI infrastructure as part of priorities set by the government’s digital sovereignty plan. Its backing of this agreement signals that the state views computing capacity as a strategic asset, on par with the AI models themselves.
The deal also fits Mistral’s broader effort to assemble a largely France-based AI value chain: models developed in Paris, infrastructure hosted in France, and public financing in support. Against the massive investments by OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic in their own compute clusters, the 200 megawatts Mistral has secured is being framed as a strong signal that the lab can keep pace without moving its computational resources offshore.
