Air Canada launches Toulouse-to-Montreal flights on Airbus A321XLR, betting big on a smaller transatlantic jet

An Air Canada Airbus A321XLR took off from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport for Montreal on June 16, 2026, marking the first commercial transatlantic flight of the aircraft from the southern French city.

The departure carried extra symbolism: the jet that lifted off from Blagnac was assembled just a few hundred yards away at Airbus’ Toulouse site, where the company designs and delivers its single-aisle aircraft. Air Canada didn’t pick Toulouse simply for convenience—it wanted the moment to land.

The Toulouse-Montreal route has existed since June 2023, first operated with an Airbus A330 and later a Boeing 787 with more than 250 seats. Switching to the A321XLR dramatically changes the business math: the aircraft carries 182 passengers—168 in economy and 14 in business—meaning fewer seats to fill, but a very different profitability profile.

Air Canada swaps a 787 for 182 seats—and aims for near-full flights

With the Boeing 787, Air Canada posted load factors of 85% in summer and between 75% and 80% in winter, according to Air Cosmos. Solid numbers, but not enough to justify a widebody on a route from a mid-sized French city.

With 182 seats, the airline is targeting a load factor close to 100%. The logic is straightforward: better to fly a smaller plane full than a larger one half empty.[1]

Jean-François Raudin, Air Canada’s general manager for France, said the Toulouse-Montreal service will run four to five times a week—an aggressive schedule for a city of Toulouse’s size.

How the A321XLR’s extra tank makes a nonstop Toulouse-Montreal possible

The A321XLR isn’t a standard A321. An additional 13,000-liter fuel tank gives it a range of about 8,300 kilometers—roughly 5,160 miles—about 2,000 kilometers (about 1,240 miles) more than the standard version. That extra margin is what makes a single-aisle, nonstop Toulouse-Montreal flight technically feasible.

Philippe Crébassa, chairman of the executive board at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, said the airport sees the aircraft as a long-haul connectivity unlock. “This new-generation aircraft broadens our prospects for long-haul connectivity between our region and the American continent,” he said. For an airport that has been chasing a direct New York flight for years, the A321XLR puts that conversation back on the table with a more realistic aircraft type.

The so-called “middle of the market” segment the A321XLR is moving into was previously served by Boeing’s 757 and 767—aircraft designed in the 1970s and gradually retired. Airbus is stepping into that space without a clearly identified direct competitor at this stage.[2]

Air Canada says it will be the first to fly the A321XLR year-round in France

From the Toulouse-Blagnac gate area, Air Canada communications vice president Christophe Hennebelle made a clear marketing claim: “Air Canada will be the first airline to operate the A321 XLR year-round in France.”

Air Canada has ordered 30 of the aircraft. Toulouse is only the first step in its French rollout. Raudin said the A321XLR will enter service from Nantes on July 23, then from Lyon starting September 8—three regional French airports gaining direct links to Canada over the course of a single summer.

The Toulouse-Montreal route also hit a milestone: it has carried its 100,000th passenger departing Toulouse since launching in June 2023, and more than 200,000 passengers total in both directions.[2]

More than 500 firm orders: Airbus’ backlog signals strong demand

Eighteen months after entering service, the A321XLR has logged more than 500 firm orders—a sales pace few aircraft programs can claim so early in their life cycle.[1]

The aircraft was certified by EASA—the European Union Aviation Safety Agency—in summer 2024. Iberia took delivery first, before Air Canada emerged as one of the most visible operators in Europe. The fact that a North American airline is prioritizing regional French airports for early deployment says something about how attractive it believes those markets are.

For Airbus, the stakes go beyond orders. The A321XLR is built in Toulouse, and the final assembly line is still hiring: a Randstad recruiting campaign is seeking to fill about 200 positions on Toulouse final assembly lines to support the production ramp-up.

Could Toulouse-New York be next?

The A321XLR’s arrival revives a question Toulouse-Blagnac Airport has been pushing since 2013: a nonstop flight to New York. Bruno Balerdi, the airport’s commercial director, said as early as 2024 that “more in-depth studies will be launched to test destinations like Miami or New York as direct flights” once the aircraft entered service.[4]

The aircraft’s roughly 5,160-mile range makes such a route technically plausible. The remaining question is commercial: which airline would try it first? Qatar Airways had mentioned a possible restart of its Toulouse-Doha route once the A321XLR was available. Nothing has been confirmed so far, but the map of what’s possible for travelers in southwest France just expanded.
