Hit-and-run driver runs red light, kills 30-year-old on e-scooter near Lyon; suspect turns himself in

Date:

A 30-year-old man riding an electric scooter was killed the morning of May 29, 2026, after a driver ran a red light and slammed into him on Route de Genas, a major roadway on the edge of Lyon’s metro area, authorities said.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route de Genas and Rue Decorps, near the border between Villeurbanne and Bron—two dense suburbs just east of Lyon. The impact was “extremely violent,” and the scooter rider died despite emergency care at the scene. The driver fled, leaving the victim in the roadway.

The collision, near Place Kimmerling, snarled traffic for hours on one of the Lyon metropolitan area’s busiest corridors, with buses blocked and congestion stretching through the area.

Driver identified after fleeing scene; death marks 21st road fatality in Rhône in 2026

According to the regional daily Le Progrès, the driver turned himself in to authorities the next day, May 30, 2026.[3] The driver had taken off immediately after the crash, the report said.

The death is the 21st fatal crash recorded on roads in the Rhône department since Jan. 1, 2026, according to the local prefecture—France’s state administration at the department level.[1] The toll includes 7 motorcyclists or motorcycle passengers, 5 people in cars, 3 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, 1 person on an e-scooter, 1 in a van, 1 in a heavy truck, and 1 in a “voiturette,” a small low-speed microcar.

The week of the Lyon-area crash was particularly deadly, the prefecture said: a young man also died in Limas after a car hit a tree, and a 19-year-old woman was killed in Charentay in a rollover.

E-scooter crashes draw renewed attention in France

The Villeurbanne-Bron crash was not an isolated case. Three days earlier, on May 26, 2026, a 13-year-old was pronounced dead in Vignoux-sur-Barangeon, in the Cher department in central France, after a serious electric-scooter crash.[2]

In La Seyne-sur-Mer, on France’s Mediterranean coast, a man in his 30s riding a scooter was also struck by a car; police said his life was not in danger.[5] After the string of incidents, law enforcement in the Var area reiterated that public-road use of scooters is strictly regulated and urged riders to be especially cautious.

Vulnerable vehicles in dense urban traffic

The growing number of crashes involving e-scooters is raising broader questions in France about how these small, exposed vehicles mix with motor traffic in crowded cities. On Route de Genas, the heavy bus network and the intersection’s layout compounded the disruption after the fatal collision.

Investigators are expected to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the driver’s failure to stop and any potential criminal liability tied to fleeing the scene.
