Scania to invest about $76 million at its Angers plant to assemble electric trucks starting in 2029

Date:

Swedish truck maker Scania says it will invest about €70 million (about $76 million) to convert its Angers, France, facility into an electric-truck assembly site, with production expected to begin in 2029.

The announcement was made during the Choose France 2026 summit, a high-profile investment event hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Scania said the move reinforces its commitment in France by steering the Angers plant toward heavy-duty electric mobility.

The site already assembles civilian trucks and military vehicles. The new plan marks a major shift as Scania prepares the factory to build battery-electric trucks.

About €70 million to modernize the Maine-et-Loire facility

The investment package is “around €70 million,” according to Ouest-France and Les Echos, with some sources putting the figure at €68 million (about $73 million). The modernization is expected to be completed by 2029, when the first battery-electric trucks are slated to roll off the lines.

The Angers plant—described as one of Europe’s reference sites for heavy-truck assembly—will expand its lineup into electric models as part of the upgrade.

Scania is framing the decision as part of a broader strategy that uses France as an industrial base for its zero-emission vehicles. Unveiling the project at Choose France was also a political and economic signal: Macron called the 2026 edition a record, citing €93 billion (about $100 billion) in announced commitments.

Scania lines up against Renault Trucks in a small but strategic market

By launching electric-truck production in Angers, Scania will compete directly with Renault Trucks in France. Electric trucks remain a niche market by volume, but large logistics fleets and local governments are pushing for faster adoption.

Local production can be a selling point—and a practical advantage in public procurement bids. Renault Trucks, long rooted in France, would no longer be the only manufacturer producing electric heavy trucks domestically, a shift that could intensify competition on pricing and delivery timelines.

Angers’ industrial footprint keeps growing

Scania’s decision also fits into a broader wave of industrial projects in and around Angers and the Maine-et-Loire department. Bull and Foxconn have announced an alliance to produce AI infrastructure at Bull’s Angers plant as part of a €120 million program (about $130 million).

For Scania, the 2029 target leaves time to deploy the equipment needed to electrify the assembly line. Until then, the Angers site is expected to continue producing its internal-combustion models and military vehicles, maintaining existing activity and jobs during the transition.
