France’s EV sales jump 48% in early 2026 even as the overall car market slips

Date:

Electric vehicles are gaining ground fast in France—even as the broader auto market cools. Between January and April 2026, France registered 148,302 new battery-electric cars, a 48% increase from the same period a year earlier, according to figures released May 1 by the Plateforme automobile (PFA), an industry group representing automakers.

The surge stands out because total new-car sales in France fell 2% over that same four-month stretch. Gas and diesel models continued to lose share, while EVs pulled the market’s headline numbers upward more quickly than many analysts expected at the start of the year.

Among private buyers, the jump was even sharper: EV registrations rose 75% to 16,731 units, the PFA said.

EVs reach 26% of new-car sales as more models arrive at lower prices

Battery-electric cars now account for 26% of total new-car sales in France, up 42% year over year, according to the PFA. Among private buyers, non-plug-in hybrids (HEVs) are close behind at 26% market share, compared with 28% for fully electric vehicles.

The PFA cited three main drivers behind the acceleration. First is a base effect: early 2026 sales are being compared with a weaker start to 2025, mechanically inflating growth rates.

Second is a structural shift in the product lineup. The industry counted 181 electric models available in March 2026, up from 114 in March 2024, with several city cars now priced below €20,000 (about $21,600), including Renault’s electric Twingo.

Third is regulation: a French law requiring corporate fleets to electrify continues to shape orders.

A fourth factor is emerging, though the PFA said it cannot yet be precisely quantified. After renewed tensions in the Middle East and rising fuel prices, decisions at the gas pump are starting to influence purchase intentions. “We won’t be able to see an effect until orders recorded in April are known in May,” the PFA spokesperson said.

A fragile overall market, despite a brighter May

Looking at the first five months of 2026, France’s overall auto market remains slightly negative: 668,376 registrations across all powertrains, down 0.6% compared with the same period in 2025.

The market improved in May 2026, helped by a return of private buyers and the continued rise of EVs. But companies are still reducing their presence in the market.

Industry groups Mobilians and Dataneo said the second half of the year should get a lift from a new round of “leasing social,” a subsidized leasing program designed to support volumes. Even so, they cautioned that much of the growth would still rely on public support measures and favorable year-over-year comparisons—not yet on fully self-sustaining demand.

Europe shows a similar pattern, with EV share rising across the EU

The French trend broadly matches what’s happening across Europe. France posted a 38.5% increase in EVs over the first two months of the year, while the European Union saw an overall acceleration of 24.4% in February 2026, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

Across the EU, EVs now capture 18.8% of the market, up from 15.2% a year earlier, ACEA data show.
