France’s defense procurement agency has formally validated MBDA’s AKERON RCX50 “munition téléopérée”—a remotely operated, guided munition—marking a key step toward a potential acquisition for the French Army.
The Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), France’s armaments directorate, said the system has reached sufficient technological and operational maturity (MTO) to move beyond the demonstrator stage and into a program that could be contracted. The decision is not an order, but it is a required gate before any formal purchase can be made.
The milestone lands as France’s armed forces push to build a deep-strike toolkit that mixes high-precision missiles with lower-cost effectors that can be used in larger numbers to saturate an adversary’s defenses—an operational logic sharpened by the war in Ukraine.
An industrial answer to “mixed salvos”
Gen. Pierre Schill, the French Army’s chief of staff, has framed the concept bluntly: “The future of deep strike probably lies in mixed-salvo capabilities, combining a saturation effect from cheap, rugged effectors and a penetration effect from high-end vectors that are precise and powerful.” The AKERON RCX50 is positioned in that first category.
In the French Army’s view, remotely operated munitions fit a battlefield reality in which guided systems can be employed in large numbers to reach targets deeper in an enemy formation—so long as unit costs remain compatible with mass procurement. The Army has explicitly stated that need, with the DGA structuring the partnership with defense industry.
DGA’s MTO validation signals the system has demonstrated enough technical maturity to consider contracting. It does not, by itself, commit France to buy the munition.
MBDA’s packed 2026: air defense and remote munitions
For MBDA—the Franco-British missile maker—the AKERON RCX50 milestone adds to an already crowded schedule. The company delivered the first SAMP/T NG air-defense system to the Italian Army in January 2026, after two successful full-configuration firings in France and Italy.
The French version of SAMP/T NG, developed with Thales within the Eurosam consortium, is expected to enter service with France’s Air and Space Force in 2027.
MBDA also booked a Romanian order for Mistral 3 short-range surface-to-air missiles worth €626 million (about $676 million) at the end of 2025, partially financed through the European EDIRPA mechanism. In other words, MBDA is advancing on multiple fronts at once—from air-defense missiles to remotely operated munitions aimed at land deep-strike missions.
The AKERON RCX50 validation comes as the French Army seeks to accelerate its long-range strike capacity. Schill has said the effort relies on “a solid partnership” between the DGA and industry, while emphasizing that building a fleet of drones and remotely operated munitions represents “another type of deep strike” that complements conventional missiles.
From demonstrator to potential contract: what comes next
DGA’s validation opens the door to a possible contract, but the timeline for any order has not been set. How quickly MBDA can move to the next step will depend on budget tradeoffs and priorities set by France’s Armed Forces Ministry as it updates the country’s multi-year military planning law, the LPM.
Separately, MBDA and Safran have confirmed their ThundART multiple rocket launcher will conduct its first firings in 2026—another sign of sustained industrial activity around long-range land effectors. For the AKERON RCX50, the latest decision marks the threshold between development and a program that could be formally pursued.
