At Eurosatory 2026, European missile maker MBDA pulled the curtain back on its Land Cruise Missile (LCM), a long-range ground-strike system derived from the French Navy’s Missile de Croisière Naval (MdCN).
The timing is deliberate. As the French Army (armée de Terre) looks to renew its ability to strike deep behind enemy lines, MBDA used the Paris-area defense show to formalize an offer that had been circulating quietly for months.
The LCM is not a clean-sheet weapon. MBDA says it is built directly from the MdCN—already fielded on the French Navy’s FREMM multi-mission frigates and its nuclear-powered attack submarines. In MBDA internal documentation, the naval missile was previously referred to as “SCALP naval.”
Why MBDA is leaning on a proven naval missile
The link to the MdCN is more than technical—it’s strategic. By adapting a weapon whose operational reliability has already been validated at sea to a ground launcher, MBDA argues it can shorten development timelines and reduce industrial risk.
That pitch is aimed squarely at France’s Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), the country’s defense procurement agency.
What the war in Ukraine changed in France’s calculus
The origins of the LCM are closely tied to lessons drawn from the war in Ukraine. The conflict has highlighted two realities at once: launching strikes from aircraft has become extremely risky against dense air defenses, and long-range ground-to-ground systems—from France’s Lance-Roquettes Unitaire (LRU) to U.S.-made HIMARS and ATACMS—have proven decisive for hitting targets deep in the rear.
SCALP missiles fired from Ukrainian Su-24s have struck ammunition depots, the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, ships at dock, and command centers. The strikes reinforced the credibility of cruise missiles designed to penetrate air defenses. They also highlighted the vulnerability of the aircraft that carry them—driving interest in a mobile ground launcher that can move quickly after firing to avoid counter-battery attacks.
MBDA is positioning the LCM as an answer to an operational gap that neither the LRU nor the future Thundart rockets can cover on their own: very long-range precision strikes from the ground, without putting an aircrew at risk.
LCM vs. Thundart: MBDA’s two-track approach to deep strike

MBDA is not betting everything on a single program. At the same Eurosatory 2026 show, the company is also presenting Thundart, a system co-developed with Safran to replace the French Army’s LRU. The two programs target different needs in range and target sets.
Thundart—whose first tests delivered performance described as “above expectations,” according to an MBDA statement dated April 28—is a rocket with a range of at least 150 km (about 93 miles) [4]. It uses a motor produced by Roxel, an MBDA subsidiary, and Safran’s AASM guidance module.
Its launcher is an all-terrain truck supplied by Scania France, able to carry eight rockets and travel up to 80 km/h (about 50 mph) on roads—allowing it to fire and relocate immediately. Under France’s 2024–2030 military planning law (LPM), the current version programs 13 multiple rocket launchers by 2030; the draft update raises that to between 13 and 26 systems by the same deadline.
The LCM is aimed at a longer reach, in the same class as ATACMS at 300 km (about 186 miles). MBDA’s message is that the two systems are complementary: guided rockets on one tier, a cruise missile on the other.

A fully French supply chain—and an export pitch
On the industrial side, MBDA and Safran have emphasized that Thundart relies on a subcontracting chain described as “entirely French,” an approach they say is meant to secure supplies. In 2026, dependence on foreign components has become a recurring political and industrial issue across major weapons programs.
For the LCM, MBDA is making a similar case: starting from the existing MdCN industrial base reduces uncertainty. The company does not need to rebuild a production chain from scratch. Subsystems from the naval missile—already qualified and in series production—would serve as the foundation.
The remaining work, MBDA says, is adapting the launch system, mission planning, and integration onto a dedicated ground launcher—an investment it portrays as limited compared with an all-new development.
MBDA is also framing the LCM as a commercial offer: a “sovereign and integrated European solution” for partners seeking to reduce dependence on U.S. missiles, particularly in a context where Washington has shown it can place conditions on how supplied weapons are used.
What comes next for the French Army
The DGA has not yet issued a contract for the LCM. What MBDA presented at Eurosatory 2026 is a capability pitch, not a procurement decision.
MBDA is trying to get the Land Cruise Missile folded into discussions around the update to France’s 2024–2030 military planning law, which already anticipates strengthening long-range ground strike.
Thundart’s delivery timeline is tighter. MBDA and Safran say they can meet the French Army’s deadlines, pointing to investments made to expand production capacity. The French supply chain and component stockpiles are central to the credibility of that industrial promise.
For the LCM, the horizon is farther out. Still, Eurosatory 2026 marks a clear step: MBDA is now publicly putting a structured offer on the table, with a defined technological lineage and an operational argument built around lessons from Ukraine—at a moment when several European nations are launching similar efforts to close a long-standing capability gap dating back to the 1990s.
