Thales, Dutch Defense Ministry strike radar partnership to expand production and testing in the Netherlands

Date:

French defense and aerospace group Thales and the Netherlands’ Ministry of Defense have signed a strategic partnership aimed at expanding radar production and building out related testing capabilities inside the Netherlands.

The agreement was signed June 22, 2026, formalizing plans to strengthen the country’s domestic radar industrial base through Thales’ long-established Dutch subsidiary, Thales Nederland.

No contract value, delivery schedule, or firm procurement order has been made public so far, according to the article.

What the radar partnership covers

The partnership focuses on two areas: local production of radar systems and the development of associated testing capabilities. The stated goal is to reinforce the Netherlands’ local radar technology value chain by leveraging Thales’ existing industrial footprint in the country.

Thales Nederland is one of the group’s long-standing foreign subsidiaries, alongside operations such as Thales UK, Thales Australia, and Thales Elektronik Systems GmbH in Germany. Thales, headquartered in Meudon outside Paris, employs about 85,000 people across more than 68 countries.

At this stage, the partners have not disclosed a contract amount or a detailed delivery timeline. The partnership has been announced without an associated firm order.

The Netherlands as a key Thales customer across multiple domains

The radar deal lands in the middle of a broader industrial relationship between Thales and The Hague. Thales is supplying the sonar systems that will be integrated into four Dutch ocean-going submarines ordered from France’s Naval Group—described in the article as Thales’ first sonar export in 15 years.

Separately, Thales Australia has been selected to accelerate deliveries of Bushmaster armored vehicles to Dutch forces, the article said.

Together, those programs make the Netherlands a multi-domain customer for Thales—submarines, land systems, and now radar.

Defense-driven growth at Thales

Thales reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of €5.3 billion (about $5.7 billion), with orders rising, according to the article. The company also characterized 2025 as a “very good year,” benefiting from a favorable cycle fueled by European defense demand.

The radar push fits into a wider strategy. In March 2026, Thales launched SkyDefender, a multi-layer, multi-domain air defense system that combines the company’s radar, satellite, and weapons-system capabilities. The program does not yet have a firm order, and a final concept selection is expected by the end of 2026, the article said.

Radar production as an industrial sovereignty issue

For the Netherlands, anchoring radar production and testing capacity on Dutch soil aligns with a broader “industrial sovereignty” approach that several European countries have accelerated since 2022. The article notes that local testing capacity can reduce logistical dependence in the event of conflict or a rapid military buildup.

For Thales, the partnership strengthens Thales Nederland’s role as a regional industrial hub that could potentially serve other customers in Northern Europe. Thales has operated in the Netherlands for decades, where its reputation in surface and air radar systems is long established, according to the article.

Technical details of the partnership—and any initial deliveries tied to it—are expected in the coming months.
