Franco-German tank maker KNDS plans rare dual listing in Paris and Frankfurt, betting on Europe’s defense boom

Date:

KNDS, the Franco-German defense group formed from the tie-up of France’s Nexter and Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, is preparing a simultaneous stock market listing in Paris and Frankfurt.

The plan was confirmed on June 24, 2026. KNDS—best known for producing France’s Leclerc main battle tank and Germany’s Leopard platform—would open its shares to investors on both sides of the Rhine through a dual listing on Euronext Paris and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

That kind of synchronized, two-market debut remains unusual for a European defense company at KNDS’ level of industrial integration.

A product of Europe’s reshaped armored-vehicle industry

KNDS is a jointly owned holding company created on a 50-50 basis between French manufacturer Nexter—owned by the French state via GIAT Industries—and Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), a family-controlled group. The merger agreement dates back to 2015 and set up a parity-based Franco-German governance structure.

Today, KNDS is among the few European players able to cover the full chain of armored combat vehicles, from ammunition to turret systems.

Its portfolio includes the Leclerc for the French Army and the Leopard 2 for the German military (the Bundeswehr), along with export customers. It is also involved in MGCS, the planned next-generation Franco-German tank program intended to replace both platforms around 2040.

A Paris-Frankfurt dual listing designed to preserve the group’s political balance

Listing in both Paris and Frankfurt reflects KNDS’ political structure as much as its financing strategy. Choosing only one market—Paris without Frankfurt, or the reverse—would have risked upsetting the founding 50-50 balance between the two shareholder camps.

A dual listing would also give each national side access to liquidity on its own financial marketplace.

The timing comes as European rearmament continues to lift defense stocks. Since 2022, the sector has benefited from upward revisions to military budgets across the continent. Listed defense groups including Rheinmetall, Leonardo and Thales have seen valuations rise sharply, and KNDS is moving toward the market in an environment where institutional demand for defense names remains strong.

Why KNDS’ listing matters for European defense

France remains a shareholder, but the post-IPO control structure is still unclear

For Paris, maintaining public control is a central issue. The French state holds its stake through Nexter, a company it has historically owned. A stock market listing does not necessarily mean a loss of sovereign control if the deal is structured with mechanisms such as differentiated voting rights or a minimum public ownership threshold, but the specific terms have not yet been confirmed.

Germany is watching just as closely. KMW is a family-owned group, and bringing in outside investors could alter its long-standing governance model. How the share capital will be divided after the listing is expected to be one of the key questions in the coming weeks.

No timeline or valuation disclosed yet

So far, KNDS has not made public a target valuation, a precise admission date, or the portion of capital that would be floated. The June 24, 2026 announcement establishes the principle and structure of the listing, but not the numbers.

For France’s defense industry, the move would mark a milestone: KNDS would become the first listed Franco-German armored-vehicle group, potentially opening a path to raise funds for next-generation programs including MGCS—whose financing has been a recurring point of friction between Paris and Berlin.
