Safran in talks to buy Exail Technologies, a French specialist in inertial navigation and underwater robotics

Date:

Safran has entered negotiations to acquire Exail Technologies, a French industrial group focused on inertial navigation and underwater robotics, led by chairman and CEO Raphaël Gorgé.

The talks, reported on June 27, 2026, highlight the French aerospace and defense supplier’s push to deepen its footprint in precision navigation technologies—systems that are increasingly central to both civilian and military platforms.

Exail Technologies is headquartered at 30 rue de Gramont in Paris and was founded in September 1988. Jean-Pierre Gorgé and Hervé Guillou sit on the board alongside Raphaël Gorgé, according to official data from INSEE (France’s national statistics agency) and INPI (the country’s intellectual property office).

Exail’s niche capabilities draw interest from major defense and aerospace players

Exail operates in high-value segments including inertial measurement units, underwater drones, and navigation systems for civil and defense applications. Those technologies are directly relevant to prime contractors in defense and aerospace, which increasingly want to bring critical components in-house rather than rely on outside suppliers.

For Safran—whose Navigation and Timing division is already considered a global reference for gyroscopes and inertial systems—an Exail deal would add directly to its technology portfolio as European defense budgets rise sharply.

Negotiations unfold as precision navigation and underwater robotics consolidate

The precision navigation and underwater robotics sector has been consolidating faster since 2024, driven by military demand and growing emphasis on technological sovereignty. Safran is not alone in tracking the market closely: U.S. and U.K. players have also stepped up dealmaking in the segment in recent years.

Negotiations are ongoing, and no price or final timeline has been disclosed at this stage.
