KNDS Unveils CAPINT “Interim” Tank to Replace France’s Leclerc by 2035 as MGCS Slips About a Decade

Date:

Defense manufacturer KNDS used the Eurosatory arms show near Paris to unveil CAPINT, an “interim capability” tank that pairs a German-derived chassis with a French remote-operated turret—aimed at replacing France’s Leclerc tank by 2035 while the long-delayed MGCS program drags on.

The announcement, made at Eurosatory in Villepinte, lands in the middle of a problem that has dogged French defense planners for years: what fills the gap if the future Franco-German main battle tank isn’t ready in time? KNDS’ answer is CAPINT—short for CAPacité INTermédiaire—built around a chassis derived from the Leopard 2A8 and a French-developed, remote-operated ASCALON turret.

The backdrop is a major schedule slip for MGCS (Main Ground Combat System), the joint Franco-German program launched in 2017 to replace both Germany’s Leopard 2 and France’s Leclerc. France’s armed forces minister, Catherine Vautrin, has said MGCS is running about 10 years late—delays she partly attributes to Berlin’s decision to pursue a Leopard 3 program in parallel.

A German chassis, a French turret: the procurement logic France’s DGA favored

The basic architecture KNDS presented was not a surprise inside French defense circles. Patrick Pailloux, the head of France’s DGA (Direction générale de l’armement, the country’s main defense procurement agency), had laid out the approach in testimony to the French Senate: “The choice of a French turret on a German chassis is probably the most rational and the fastest.”

That is the formula KNDS formally put on the table at Villepinte on June 15. “Based on an improved chassis derived from the latest version of the Leopard 2A8 and equipped with a remote-operated ASCALON turret from KNDS France, CAPINT is KNDS’ proposal for the new French armored combat system,” the group said in its presentation.

ASCALON—short for “Autoloaded and SCALable Outperforming guN”—is a 140 mm gun that has long been a focal point of Franco-German rivalry inside MGCS. Rheinmetall had pushed its own 130 mm turret and declined to align with the French caliber. Putting ASCALON on CAPINT therefore doubles as a message to Berlin: France intends to keep control of the reference ammunition for the future tank, without giving up leverage in the joint program.

MGCS in the background: a long-term program, with tensions still visible

CAPINT’s debut immediately reignited questions about whether MGCS can survive in its current form. Some observers read the move as an early step toward abandoning the Franco-German tank effort—coming just a week after a halt to SCAF, the planned future Franco-German fighter aircraft.

Pailloux pushed back on that interpretation during a press briefing on the sidelines of Eurosatory. “MGCS is not designed with the same logic, in the sense that we don’t have the industrial problem we had on SCAF,” he said, stressing that MGCS involves only two industrial players: KNDS and Rheinmetall.

He said he was “reasonably optimistic” about MGCS’ future, while acknowledging “offers from industry that are too expensive” and ongoing talks over “the cost estimate for the next phases.”

France’s DGA had also considered—by way of comparison—buying interim tanks directly from Germany, an option that appears to have been set aside in favor of CAPINT. In April, Vautrin framed the political and military stakes: “The challenge of this interim capability is that it should be the first building block of MGCS. It will be not the last tank of the old generation but the first tank of the new generation.”

Pourquoi le CAPINT rebat les cartes du programme MGCS

Continuité capacitaire
CAPINT is intended to bridge the gap between the planned retirement of the Leclerc and the highly uncertain arrival of MGCS. Without it, the French Army would risk a temporary break in armored capability.
MGCS bogged down
Launched in 2017, the Franco-German program has accumulated roughly 10 years of delay. Berlin’s Leopard 3 launch and disputes over industrial cost estimates have weighed on negotiations.
The 140 mm caliber fight
By keeping the 140 mm ASCALON as a core card for MGCS, KNDS preserves France’s position against Rheinmetall and its 130 mm gun. CAPINT does not burn that advantage.
A first building block for the next tank
Vautrin positioned CAPINT not as a stopgap tank but as “the first tank of the new generation,” anchoring the future MGCS.
A parallel with SCAF
Announced a week after the Franco-German SCAF fighter program was abandoned, CAPINT has fueled questions about the durability of bilateral defense cooperation.

French lawmakers and industry converge on an interim tank plan

On the political side, French lawmakers had already anticipated the looming Leclerc succession problem. During debate over an update to France’s 2024–2030 military planning law (LPM), legislators adopted an amendment calling for studies “with a view to defining the capability succeeding the Leclerc tank,” with priority given to “the skills of national industrial players.” CAPINT’s Eurosatory unveiling fits squarely within that trajectory.

One key issue remains the gun caliber and how it plays into MGCS bargaining. KNDS appears to have preserved the 140 mm ASCALON as a central French argument inside MGCS, where it is a major point of leverage against Rheinmetall. Deploying it too early on an interim standard, the article notes, could have weakened technology-sharing arrangements between the two countries for the future tank targeted around 2040.

Pailloux has put a hard marker on the interim timeline in recent exchanges: 2035 for delivery of the first CAPINT. MGCS, by contrast, remains a very long-term research-and-development program, with no stabilized delivery schedule at this stage.

CAPINT and MGCS: key takeaways

    • CAPINT pairs a chassis derived from the Leopard 2A8 with the French 140 mm ASCALON turret.
    • KNDS unveiled CAPINT on June 15, 2026, at the Eurosatory show in Villepinte.
    • MGCS, launched in 2017, is running roughly 10 years late, according to France’s armed forces minister.
    • CAPINT is intended to replace the Leclerc around 2035 while France waits for the future Franco-German tank.
    • France’s DGA and Patrick Pailloux had previously recommended the “French turret on German chassis” option in the Senate.
